I have really been pleased with the results of making
After using the detergent exclusively for four months now,
I truly believe that I will always make it.
It works and I love it.
I am ready to move on and make another change!
I've been wanting to try homemade "windex".
I've always used Wal-Mart brand Great Value Glass Cleaner.
The homemade recipe calls for 1 part vinegar to every 5 parts water.
Now Mr. H. does NOT like the smell of vinegar.
He has an aversion to it.
He loves to eat the pickles and pickled okra that I make,
but he doesn't like to be around when I am making them
because of the vinegar smell in the kitchen.
So I was a little concerned that the smell might bother him.
I mixed up 1/2 cup vinegar with 2 1/2 cups water.
~the test~
I decided to clean the glass on our storm door.
Our storm door that is right next to Mr. H.'s home office,
I might add. ;-)
I might add. ;-)
I was more than a little bit doubtful of the effectiveness of the vinegar and water.
But, boy, let me tell you. It did work well.
I might even go so far as to say it worked better than my Great Value.
I think Mr. H. could tell I was cleaning the door,
but he didn't look up or say anything about smelling vinegar.
He even went out that door a few minutes later and didn't notice anything.
I think you can smell the vinegar, which I don't mind at all,
as you are cleaning, but within a minute or two the smell is gone.
After I use up this last bottle of Great Value glass cleaner I have in my cleaning closet,
I believe I'll continue to use the homemade.
And of course, for the cost run down -
Original Windex Glass Cleaner 32 oz. (at Wal-Mart)
$2.87
Great Value Original Glass Cleaner 32 oz. (at Wal-Mart)
$0.99
Homemade Vinegar and Water Glass Cleaner 32 oz.
$0.15
Great Value Distilled White Vinegar 64 oz. $1.18
for 32 oz. of homemade cleaner I will need 8 oz. of vinegar
Another change for the healthier, the safer and the cheaper...
bring on the next homemade cleaner!! Stay tuned. :-)
Oh this is lovely! I tried to make some homemade laundry detergent once...but I messed it up somehow... :)
ReplyDeleteI've been planning on trying again soon! And I may try this too!
My family's house burnt in 2008. And we gutted it and lived in it for a year. Then moved to an apartment. Now we are getting ready to continue work on it. Our windows survived the fire, but they were blacken with smoke! I spent hours cleaning them with the Great Value brand and tons of paper towels. Since the house has been empty for a little over a year, I'm sure they are very dirty!!! :)
Thanks for sharing, and God bless,
Ella
Thank you Ella - I hope you get to move back into your home soon. I think the vinegar will do a great job on your windows. :-)
ReplyDeleteI use vinegar mixture too. I like to add a little alcohol along with a few drops of "Young's" peppermint essential oil. The oil is a little expensive because it is edible, and very very potent, but makes my cleaner smell yummy! :)
ReplyDeleteMrs. H....
ReplyDeleteYour sister gave me your blog address a while ago and I love it. You've convinced me to try the laundry detergent. I have been using homemade cleaners for about 2 years, but didn't want to mess with the laundry detergent at the time. Think I will give it a try....

I use vinegar and water on my counter tops, floors, bathroom sinks, anywhere I can. Vinegar is a natural sanitizer/disinfectant...it is my favorite all purpose cleaner! You can also add it to laundry. I am loving your blog. God Bless
