Keeping Christmas

It is a good thing to observe Christmas Day.

The mere marking of times and season, when men agree to stop work

and make merry together, is a wise and wholesome custom.

It helps one to feel the supremacy of the common life over the individual life.

It reminds a man to set his own little watch, now and then,

by the great clock of humanity which runs on sun time.

But there is a better thing than the observance of Christmas Day,

and that is keeping Christmas.

Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people,

and to remember what other people have done or you;

to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world;

to put your rights in the back ground, and your duties in the middle distance,

and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the foreground;

to see that your fellowmen are just as real as you are,

and try to look behind their faces to their hearts hungry for joy;

to own that probably the only good reason for your existence

is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life;

to close your book of complaints against the management of the universe,

and look around you for a place where you can sow a few seeds of happiness -

are you willing to do these things even for a day?

Than you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to stoop down and consider the needs and the desires of little children;

to remember the weakness and loneliness of people who are growing old;

to stop asking how much your friends love you,

and ask yourself whether you love them enough;

to bear in mind the things that other people have to bear in their hearts;

to try to understand what those who live in the same house with you really want,

without waiting for them to tell you;

to trim your lamp so that it will give more light and less smoke;

and to carry it in front so that your shadow will fall behind you;

to make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden for your kindly feelings,

with the gate open -

are you willing to do these things even for a day?

Than you can keep Christmas.

Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world -

stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death -

and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem nineteen hundred years ago

is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love?

Easy Christmas Decorating Idea

Do you have framed pictures of family around your home? Maybe some in the kitchen where you spend so much time?

For the month of December, replace the ones in the frames with Christmas photos - the children with Santa when they were little, family Christmas card portraits, candids of Christmas Eve and Christmas morning from years past, snapshots of favorite holiday activities and beloved traditions. Gather ones you have, match the sizes up to a frame each will fit in and...ta-da! You have instant Christmas decorations that will warm your heart! Leave the original pictures in the frames and just put the Christmas ones on top, so after Christmas all you have to do is walk around and take out the holiday pictures as you put away your other decorations. Each year you'll have a few new ones to add. Have fun! :-)

"No Sew" Christmas Window Topper

This year, as I was putting up my kitchen Christmas decorations, I decided I needed a red curtain topper for the window above my sink. After looking all over town (in other words I'd looked at Wal-Mart and Target!) I hadn't found a thing. So, I thought I'd see what I could do on my own - without spending too much time, too much money or too much energy. And without sitting down at a sewing machine - which I haven't done in going on 18 years...

My answer - "stitch witchery"!

I used my blue gingham summer valance as a pattern,

and created "seams" with the stitch witchery.

I now present…

...my Christmas kitchen window! Love it!

Total cost - $4.10

fabric $2.81 - 1 1/2 yards fabric @ $1.87/yd
stitch witchery $1.29 - 20 yards Prym Sewing Regular Weight (used about 7 yards)

And no, it's not the camera angle - it really is a bit crooked.

;-)

But, for a first attempt at something I am not very talented at...

I am quite pleased! :-)

The Sweet Smell of Christmas

After my friend Heather mentioned a potpourri she was simmering at her house this morning, I rummaged in the pantry to see if I could create some of my own...

It is definitely smelling like Christmas

in our schoolroom this afternoon! :-)

Christmastime Simmering Potpourri

zest of 1 orange
2 tablespoons red hot cinnamon candies
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

In a small saucepan, combine ingredients with 2 cups water. Bring to a boil and stir until candies are melted. Reduce heat to simmer. Enjoy the sweet smell of Christmas all through the house!

Remember to keep an eye on the potpourri,

and add water as needed.

All Done!

Poncho completed during oral spelling test time this morning!

When wrapping it up for my niece,

I will be sure to include leftover yarn

for plenty of matching hair bows. :-)
