Mrs. Meyer's Seasonal Scents

I was so happy to find the holiday line of Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day products at Target
right before Thanksgiving.

I enjoyed using the orange clove scent during the last few weeks of fall.

Right now I'm using the Iowa Pine scent.

I am saving the Cranberry scent to use in January and February.

Then I'll switch back to Lemon Verbena or Basil for the springtime!

Spring Cleaning

I've been a fan of
cleaning products for along time.
They are such a treat.

I was so excited to find the
products at my grocery store
and couldn't wait to do some
spring cleaning with them.

I bought them as a special treat,
came home and used the counter spray
ONE TIME
and my family nixed the fragrance right away. :-(
ALL three of them didn't like it.
So, back went the sweet honeysuckle to the store
and I'll be spring cleaning with my trusty
scent that we all love.

I'm hoping to try out the new
scent on the family soon.
We'll see how that goes.
My daughter said, "WHY would we want the house to smell like radishes??"
They just don't understand... ;-)

Something else that I've tried recently
are the ever popular
"magic erasers".

I was very skeptical,
but look what one little swipe
did to my yucky back door!

And I couldn't believe what the bath scrubber
did for my kid's vinyl bath tub.  A-mazing!
Ever tried them?

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

I've been using my
for almost two years now
and couldn't be happier with it.
Love it.
I decided to take the plunge and mix up some
homemade dishwasher detergent.
The only thing I needed to buy was a bottle of
Lemi Shine.  I had everything else on hand at home.

The results weren't quite what I hoped.
I used it for about a week, with vinegar as a rinse aide,
and my dishes seemed clean, but they had a film and just
didn't look sparkly to me.

I'm planning to do some more research
and tweaking this summer.
If anyone has had great success
with homemade dishwasher detergent
please feel free to leave me a comment with suggestions!

~ode to the clothesline~

"The Clothesline Said So Much"

A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.

For then you'd see the 'fancy sheets'
And towels upon the line;
You'd see the 'company table cloths'
With intricate design.

The line announced a baby's birth
To folks who lived inside
As brand new infant clothes were hung
So carefully with pride.

The ages of the children could
So readily  be known
By watching how the sizes changed
You'd know how much they'd grown.

It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.

It said, 'Gone on vacation now'
When lines hung limp and bare.
It told, 'We're back!' when full lines sagged
With not an inch to spare.

New folks in town were scorned upon
If wash was dingy gray,
As neighbors  carefully raised their brows,
And looked the other way.

But clotheslines now are of the past
For dryers make work less.
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody's  guess.

I really miss that way of life
It was a friendly sign
When neighbors knew each other best
By what hung on the line!

"The Backyard Clothesline"

You'll say I'm 'quaintly countrified,'
Old fashioned as you please.
But I love the sight of fresh, clean laundry
Tossing in the breeze.

To suspend each garment on the line,
Then give the wind full play;
To caress and gently fragrance
In that sweet 'outdoorsy' way.

To bask in sunny radiance,
Towels neatly hung in rows;
Snowy linens snapping crisply,
Darling dancing baby clothes.

And when at dusk I gather them
If feel extremely blessed
That line-dried and sun-kissed cleanliness
Clothes the ones that I love best.

Miss Daisy knows the path to the clothesline,
and thinks I can't find it without her. ;-)

More baby steps...

I have really been pleased with the results of making
After using the detergent exclusively for four months now,
I truly believe that I will always make it.
It works and I love it.

I am ready to move on and make another change!

I've been wanting to try homemade "windex".
I've always used Wal-Mart brand Great Value Glass Cleaner.

The homemade recipe calls for 1 part vinegar to every 5 parts water.

Now Mr. H. does NOT like the smell of vinegar.
He has an aversion to it.
He loves to eat the pickles and pickled okra that I make,
but he doesn't like to be around when I am making them
because of the vinegar smell in the kitchen.
So I was a little concerned that the smell might bother him.

I mixed up 1/2 cup vinegar with 2 1/2 cups water.

~the test~

I decided to clean the glass on our storm door.
Our storm door that is right next to Mr. H.'s home office,
I might add. ;-)
I was more than a little bit doubtful of the effectiveness of the vinegar and water.
But, boy, let me tell you.  It did work well.
I might even go so far as to say it worked better than my Great Value.

I think Mr. H. could tell I was cleaning the door,
but he didn't look up or say anything about smelling vinegar.
He even went out that door a few minutes later and didn't notice anything.
I think you can smell the vinegar, which I don't mind at all,
as you are cleaning, but within a minute or two the smell is gone.

After I use up this last bottle of Great Value glass cleaner I have in my cleaning closet,
I believe I'll continue to use the homemade.

And of course, for the cost run down -

Original Windex Glass Cleaner 32 oz. (at Wal-Mart)
$2.87

Great Value Original Glass Cleaner 32 oz. (at Wal-Mart)
$0.99

Homemade Vinegar and Water Glass Cleaner 32 oz.
$0.15

Great Value Distilled White Vinegar 64 oz. $1.18
for 32 oz. of homemade cleaner I will need 8 oz. of vinegar

Another change for the healthier, the safer and the cheaper...
bring on the next homemade cleaner!!  Stay tuned. :-)

~Homemade Laundry Detergent~

I have no idea why it took me so long
to start making my own laundry detergent.
It was extremely easy and really fun. :-)

These are the ingredients you need.
They are not at all hard to find.
In fact they were all on the same shelf at my Wal-Mart!

Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda
20 Mule Team Borax
Fels-Naptha Laundry Bar Soap
(You can use other bar soap,
but I really like the smell and color
of the Fels-Naptha.)

You can make powdered or liquid detergent.
I chose to make the liquid because,
one, it is the best value,
and two, liquid detergent is best for our septic system.

The steps are very simple.
First you grate your bar of soap.
Simmer 4 cups of water on the stove,
add the soap a little at a time
and stir until it is dissolved.

Pour 3 gallons of warm tap water into a five gallon bucket.
Add your soapy water from the stove.
Then add 1 cup of washing soda
and 1/2 cup of borax.
Stir well until it is all combined.

Put the lid on your bucket and let it sit
for 24 hours.

And then...
waaa-laaa!
I was so excited to do the first load.
I used one cup of detergent.

It came out great and I thought the towels
smelled very fresh.

But now for the fun details!  Let's talk cost break down.

For this first batch I used

1 cup of washing soda
1/2 cup of borax
1 bar of soap

and made 52 cups of detergent = 52 loads

In my busy household I wash, on average, 1 to 2 loads of laundry a day, 7 days a week.  That would be between 31 to 62 loads a month.  So I am figuring that this one batch (52 cups/loads) will last me about a month.  Therefore I will probably need to make a batch each month, or 12 batches (624 cups/loads) per year.  How much will this cost?

I will need 12 cups of washing soda for the year.  A box of washing soda contains about 6 cups, so I will need 2 boxes.
I will need 6 cups of borax for the year.  The one box I already bought will be more than enough.
And I will need 12 bars of soap.

Here are the costs:

washing soda $2.77 per box X 2 boxes = $5.54 total
borax $2.98 per box X 1 box = $2.98 total
bar soap $0.97 per bar X 12 bars = $11.64 total

Total cost for a years worth of ingredients (including tax) $21.82

Divide that by 624 loads and you get a cost of

$0.035 per load

Ok, so how much would I spend for a year's worth of commercial detergent??

I looked up Tide with Bleach at Wal-Mart.

A 100 ounce jug washes 52 loads.  So I would need 12 jugs each year.

The cost:

Tide with Bleach $11.97 X 12 jugs = $143.64

Total cost for a years worth of detergent (including tax) $155.49

Divide that by 624 loads and you get a cost of

$0.25 per load

A difference of $0.215 per load or $133.67 per year!

If that wasn't neat enough,
think of this.
At the end of 12 months
I will have three cardboard containers
and 12 paper wrappers to dispose off -
easily burned with our trash.

Contrast that with adding 12 of these every year to a land fill.

If you are interested in trying this out for yourself, here are three posts that I found very helpful.

This is wonderful step-by-step post that includes a stain fighting comparison of homemade detergent and Tide with Bleach.

You'll have to scroll down a bit to get to the detergent recipe.

Simple directions for homemade powdered detergent.

This is a year's worth of washing soda and borax
and six months worth of laundry bar soap. :-)

Mrs. Meyer's Clean Home

I have enjoyed using Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day products around the house from time to time.
They're a homemaking treat. :-)

When I saw this book at the library I brought it home to thumb through,
thinking it was just another housekeeping book to peruse,
but I am really enjoying it!  And probably going to read it from cover to cover.

from the back cover-
"Ever since my daughter Monica started Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day, people are always asking, "Is Mrs. Meyer a real person?"  Well I'm here to confirm it once and for all.  I raised nine kids and kept the house tidy for more than fifty years, so I know a thing or two about cleaning.  Grab your duster and follow me - we've got some work to do!"

Tuesday Tips

After frying or scrambling an egg,
remove the egg to your plate,
turn off the stove,
leave the pan on the burner,
and drop a few ice cubes in the pan.

When it's time to clean up -
the egg comes off easier than if you had soaked the pan.

I don't know why this works,
but it does!

Tuesday Tips

Heritage Schoolhouse introduces...

~Tuesday Tips~

Since I love to collect little household hints, tricks, and tips,
I thought I'd start sharing them with you each week!

This week's tip - the best way to clean your microwave.
I've been doing this for years and it works like a charm. :-)

Into a microwave safe dish, squeeze the juice of one lemon and add a cup of water. Microwave the mixture for 3-5 minutes or until the water comes to a boil. Leave in the microwave for 10 minutes without opening the door. (This allows the steam to condense on the walls and roof of the oven.) When the time is up, use a soft dishcloth or paper towel to wipe out the microwave. Everything will come up so easily - no elbow grease required! Your microwave will look and smell sparkly fresh and clean! :-)
